It’s been a long time I didn’t post a note
Topic for this note is about an amazing feature of VMware 6.5.3, which is Unity.

Classic problems when we deal with guest OS are:

• cannot mounting USBs
• cannot do a “copy paste” of words, sentences, and files between host and guest OS
• difficult to enable directory sharing
• cannot have a drag and drop feature among host and guests OS
• ….and many more…

U can solve those problems by either upgrading your VMware version to 6.5.3 or fresh installation of VMware 6.5.3. I downloaded VMware Workstation 6.5.3 for Linux in .rpm package from this site. Then, simply run rpm -ivh VMware-Workstation-6.5.3-185404.i386.rpm command.

The installation process ran well without any dependencies problem :D..
I tried to install Windows XP SP 3 (Genuine License) as the guest OS, after the installation process is done, it will automatically install VMware tools.

A bit different when I install CentOS 5.3 as the guest OS on VMware. It didn’t automatically install the VMware tools, so you need to install it manually. Activate your Linux guest OS, then go to menu VM, then click on Install VMware Tools …. It will automatically mounting a VMware Tools DVD-ROM. You can see a DVD icon on your Desktop. Try to access the directory, then you will find VMwareTools-7.8.6-185404.i386.rpm package. You can run  rpm -ivh /media/VMware\ Tools/VMwareTools-7.8.6-185404.i386.rpm command to install it.

The following picture is a screenshot of my Centos VMware.

To enjoy the Unity feature, all you need is just click the Unity button on VMware top panel (I gave a red circle on it).

Another picture is showing you a copy paste “helloWorld.txt” file from guest OS Windows XP SP3 to the host OS (currently i’m using Fedora 10) and you can do it vice versa or just simple by dragging and dropping the file that you want to copy.

You can also have a shared directory between the OSes. To create a shared directory, you can go to VM menu > Settings > go to tab Options, then you will find setting for Shared Folders.

Mudah2an tidak terlalu terlambat untuk menceritakan sedikit tentang Global Conference on Open Source software (GCOSS) yang diadain pada tanggal 26 - 27 Oktober 2009 yang lalu di Hotel Shangrila - Jakarta.

Acara GCOSS dibuka dengan resmi oleh Bapak Tifatul Sembiring Menteri Komunikasi dan Informasi Teknologi Kabinet Indonesia Bersatu Jilid II di Era Presiden Susilo Bambang Yudoyono 2009-2014, dalam sambutannya, beliau aga mengalami kesulitan dalam mengucapkan kata ‘proprietary’ correctly ^_^ sampe2 semua yang hadir membantu beliau untuk mengucapkan kata tersebut.

Mengenai acara GCOS nya sendiri, menurut saya, para peserta ga rugi bayar 150.000 utk 2 hari karena semua pakar open source numpuk di acara itu.
kalo ada segelintir orang yang bilang “ah acaranya gitu2 ajah” ya ga salah juga karna emang 2 hari itu acaranya estafet workshop: Blender, Health, Network.

Disana saya bertemu dengan Dr. Alvin dari IOSN dan salah seorang pembicara dalam salah satu acara OSS di malaysia, hihihi jadi sekalian reunian.

Dalam acara tersebut ada salah satu rekan POSS PU yang membuka booth untuk mempresentasikan software yang dia develop utk keperluan thesis. sempat diwawancara sama beberapa pengunjung GCOS, termasuk romi satria wahono,developer wireshark indonesia, and e-lifestyle metro tv..*sempat nggak dipercaya sbg developer nya loh*

Secara ga sengaja dalam acara yang sama saya ditunjuk untuk menjadi leader untuk membentuk komunitas yang bernama OSUM.

Untuk estafet workshopnya yang saya ikuti adalah Blender dimana Mas Adez Aulia sebagai pembicaranya dibantu oleh mas Adi Teguh. Uhmm mas adez keren bgd dalam memberikan materi karena workshopnya diselingi oleh permainan2 kecil yang membuat peserta saling mengenal dan lebih akrab satu dengan yang lainnya.

Pada kesempatan itu, mas adez memaparkan cara untuk membuat animasi gerakan pada tubuh orang. Uhmm awalnya susah bgd tapi setelah dapet mouse ternyata jauh lebih gampang hehehe that’s the key… use mouse ^_^

Umm klo diliat2 ya, sebagian besar pengisi booth di acara GCOS Exhibition adalah anak2 muda,  dan itu menjadi motivasi buat POSS PU untuk lebih aktif lagi..
